I grew up on the likes of Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Humble Pie and Led Zeppelin. But I also got into the prog rock of the day like Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Brand X, Dixie Dreggs and Zappa.
Plus what I would consider the alternative music of that era in bands like King Crimson and Traffic. I also dug southern rockers like the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynryd. And who could have grown up in the 60s and 70s not liking Jimi, Eagles, Doors, Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher and all the iterations of Clapton?
Then, of course, along came Stevie. I still like that stuff and the virtuoso guys like Vai and Satriana, but I also have made it a minor mission to seek out guys who are lesser known, but are absolutely not lesser players.
Some of them are guys who play 200-plus shows a year out of a beat up cargo van. When you go to see them in small venues, they blow you away with their music and then hang out and shoot the shit with you after the show. Too cool. Some of them are better known and play bigger venues, but all of them in my humble opinion, are sorely underrated. Click away, in no particular order. They're all links to the band's website. Enjoy.

CITHARA EST VITA

"Cithara Est Vita" -- guitar is life. We are an edgy power trio from Northern Indiana, composed of veteran musicians who have been "playing out" for a combined 80-plus years. We play classic rock, blues rock and original material.

I play guitar and sing in the band. I've been playing in Northern Indiana clubs for nearly 30 years. I grew up on classic rock and still enjoy playing those tunes, but more recently I've been working up a repertoire of blues rock.  The band covers the likes of Popa Chubby, Chris Duarte and  Jimmy Thackery. We put an edge on blues standards like Mustang Sally and Turtle Blues and have our versions of Clapton's Crossroads and Hendrix' Hey Joe. Classic rock covers include selections from Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Bob Seger, CCR, John Mellencamp, Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Hollies and more.  The band also has worked up a few of my originals

John "Lord of the Strings" DeGroff, Warsaw,  (bass, vocals) has a storied musical past. He is the original bassist and founding member of  the Christian rock band Petra. He was with the band through 1979 and appears on their first two albums. He also spent several years doing session work in Nashville. He brings a vast array of bass clef wizardry to the band.

Dave "Weapon of Mass Percussion" Oliver rounds out the band with rock solid, technical and precise drum riffs. He is a long-time student of legendary percussion teacher Neil Graham in Fort Wayne and currently studies under Moeller guru Billy Canty in Mishawaka. (Graham was Rush drummer Neil Peart's former drum tech.) Oliver has played in several bands over the past decade, including the  hard-edged Migraines and, most recently with the punkishly slammin' Grave Robber. He appears on the Grave Robber CD, "Inner Sanctum."

I tell everybody I've got one of the best rhythm sections in Northern Indiana.
